Even with this ethical assurance, the students’ behaviour felt influenced by their ethical intuitions.

Tolich sought advice from a number of philosophy colleagues. They were asked to describe the moral compass that generated the weirdness the students felt conducting this covert research without first gaining informed consent. One scholar replied succinctly in Kantian terms:

The students don’t like the exercise because it seems like they are treating the check-out person as a means not an end. The check-out operative is an object to be observed rather than a person to be respectfully interacted with. So they are not being treated as a moral equal.
